St. Patricks Day, 2021

On a beautiful, glorious Springtime St. Patrick’s Day in Charleston, SC, while wearing their best Irish themed face masks and following the CDC social distancing guidelines, the members of The Manning Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians met at St. Lawrence Cemetery to celebrate the Patron Saint of Ireland’s Feast Day. A marvelous time was had by all that attended. The Charleston Pipe Band was no doubt the highlight of the afternoon. The twelve members of the band, dressed to the hilt in their kilts, filled the air with the wonderful sound of the pipes. The music they played lifted everyone’s spirts. There is no doubt that the permanent residents enjoyed the concert as well.

Why a cemetery? Two reasons. First, St. Lawrence Cemetery is home to an Irish War Memorial that was erected years ago to honor all the Irish that served and died fighting for the United States. Prayers for their souls were recited and the band played “Amazing Grace” to lift the prayers to heaven. Second reason, no one in residence was going to complain or be concerned that we were gathering to pay tribute to St. Patrick, as well as enjoy some long delayed fellowship. It had been over a year since many in attendance had seen one another.

Guinness, and other libations were served, along with sub sandwiches and pizza that was actually delivered to the festivities. After enjoying being with one another for close to two hours, the group disbursed to headed to various pubs to continue the day’s celebration.
